The Herbalist - A low cost, full featured, comprehensive herbal database featuring over 300 herbs. Well researched information is included with each herb featuring a photo, scientific and common names, brief description of use, botany, medicinal uses as well as history & folklore. A complete list of herbs, indications, actions, chemistry, preparations and botanical terms may be found in the menu bar of Herbalist under 'help' The sophisticated search features allow you to identify herbs that are useful for a particular indication (similar to symptoms) as well as herbs that have a particular action on the body. You may refine your list of herbs by selecting both an indication and an action. As an example a search for the indication of 'Anorexia nervosa' and the action of 'nutritive' will result in a list of herbs that are both useful in treating Anorexia and have a nutritive effect on the body You are able to add your own information to the brief description, history & folklore and botany fields as well as your own common names. These are then included in the common name search There are two additional free text fields where you may add your own information. For Phytotherapy students or natural therapy Practitioners, this information could include references and the latest research on particular herbs. For the herbal gardening enthusiast cultivation information or seed suppliers may be added. For the home herbal enthusiast, recipes or grandma's home remedies could be added into these useful fields. Let Herbalist become your own personal knowledge base!
Here's a preview of how the program works... Even a computer novice would be delighted with this programs easy to use features!
You may search for a particular herb by Scientific/Botanic, or common name
There are almost 200 Medical Indications that may be experienced. These relate to symptoms and range from Abscess to Wounds-bleeding. A complete list of 'Medical Indications' and their meaning is available in the glossary section of help
Here
we have set 'Medical Indications' to search for herbs useful in the
treatment of Anorexia nervosa
Here
we have refined the list of herbs useful for Anorexia nervosa by adding
herbs that also have a nutritive action on the body (found under
'Medical Actions'). Our search now reveals herbs that are useful for
Anorexia nervosa and also have a nutritive action on the body
Each
plant has a photograph. In the photo section there is a list of common
names and a brief description of that herbs main medicinal use. You are
able to add your own common names as well as add to the brief
description through the add notes function that is circled in red on the
screen shot Note, common names that you add are included in the common name search for all of the herbs in the database
'Plant description' provides information on the botany of the plant. If you have more botanical information you would like to add this may be done through the add notes function. Your additions come under a heading called 'My notes'
I'll
show you. Here I have added some additional information into 'Plant
description' The Add notes field is limitless so don't worry that you may run out of space, you won't!!
Under Chemistry the main constituents of the herb are listed. If you would like to add more detail on chemistry, once again you may do this though the add notes function. Your additions will appear under a heading called 'My Notes'. A description of 23 of the main chemical constituents of plants is available in the glossary section of help
In 'Medicinal Uses' you will find, 'Part Used', 'Medical Indications', Medical Actions' Preparation and Dosage' and 'Cautions'. In this version of Herbalist we don't allow you to add to these fields, however in the Herbalist/Pro version you will be able to these fields. An explanation of preparations is available in the glossary section of help
There
is information on the history and folklore of the herb. If there is
something you would like to add this may once again be done under the
add notes function. Your additions will appear under a heading called
'My notes'
